Kunjakanan - NRL Township

Kunjakanan - the NRL Township, occupying more than 250 acres of undulating terrain and separated from the Refinery by a few kilometres, was constructed without disturbing the erstwhile picturesque landscape of the area. This served the dual purpose of preserving the natural profile while at the same time adding to the aesthetic beauty to the township.

Nestled among the luxuriant hills, the pretty township houses almost all the NRL employees and their families. The Township has all modern facilities within its boundary limits. Apart from the basic necessities of Residential quarters, Hospital and School, the Township has a Co-operative society which caters to the day to day needs of its residents. Well maintained parks, open spaces and entertainment facilities like the Club, Community Centre, swimming pools, gyms, tennis courts and playgrounds make for a good and comfortable living experience.

Delhi Public School, Numaligarh

Established in the year 1997, the prestigious Delhi Public School, Numaligarh which is situated inside the Township premises has already made a mark as an educational institute to reckon with. Affiliated to the CBSE, the School imparts quality education for students from Nursery to Class XII. Apart from academics, the school pays special attention to identify and nurture latent talents amongst its students and steer them in the right direction. Students have the option to choose from a wide range of extra-curricular activities that the school offers such as educational tours, trekking, computer courses, horse riding, sarod and sitar classes, clay modelling, scouts historical society, nature club and NCC - forming an integral part of the curriculum. A well-furnished hostel complex with a sound academic ambience has been established to cater to around two hundred boarders inside the school premises.

The Vivekananda Kendra - NRL Hospital

The Vivekananda Kendra hospital was established in the year 1998 with a small OPD. The hospital is a full-fledged multi-specialty hospital with specialist in almost all the disciplines like Gynecology, pediatrics, surgery, Medicine, EYE, ENT, and dental departments. It is also equipped with all facilities such as Neonatal ward, Burn Unit, OT Complex, Ultrasound Section, pharmacy, blood bank, pathological lab, X-Ray Section etc. The hospital caters to requirements of both Kunjakanan residents & nearby places and has a dedicated team of doctors and paramedical staff providing quality healthcare services in the community as well as towns and villages in the neighborhood.

The Butterfly Valley

NRL is committed to the cause of protecting and conserving the environment and ecology in the vicinity of the refinery so as to maintain the fragile ecological balance in an industry environment. A true manifestation of the Company's efforts in this direction is the setting up of an entire bio system comprising of rare and endangered species of butterflies, aptly called the Butterfly Valley within the Township premises. The sprawling Butterfly Valley covers around 30 acres of land surrounded by small hillocks and is located adjacent to the enchanting Deopahar hills. The Valley is also replete with varied flora and fauna and houses about 60,000 plants endemic to North East India. At least 75 species of butterflies belonging to five broad butterfly families have been listed so far. A large number of host plants for different butterfly species dot the valley. A laboratory is also housed inside the premises where entomologists carry out their observation studies and other research work. A moth pavilion is an added attraction where visitors get an opportunity to know the distinction between a moth and a butterfly.

An ecological hot spot in itself, the North-east is already a natural home to a dozen of endangered butterfly species. But a vast area of this untamed land is yet to be tapped and it is, therefore, that the Butterfly Park offers an enthralling, unique opportunity to explore the verdant beauty of Northeast with its rich flora and fauna.

SMRITIBON

The immense medicinal benefits of herbal plants are known to all. Numaligarh Refinery located strategically near the rich forest belt of Kaziranga National Park, Deopahar Hills and Nambor forest is bestowed naturally with a wide variety of medicinal plants, which are available in its vicinity.

With a view to extract the medicinal benefits of those plants, a herbal medicinal garden has been established which is named 'Smritibon', located within the Butterfly Valley. 'Smriti' means 'Remembrance' and true to its name, it perpetuates the noble idea of commemorating our beloved ones, by way of planting herbal plants in their names.

COMMUNITY CENTRE

The Community Center is in the heart of the Township and it comprises of the co-operative society and facilities which include an Auditorium - with state-of-the-art acoustics and design features. The community center Auditorium facilitates various meetings, functions and occasions. The total seating capacity is 346 nos. The auditorium consists of a sound system of 7-in-1 surround sound with array speakers, a video system with full HD Projector and a cyclorama screen which enables support live programs and the screening of movies.

KUNJABON

KUNJABON is an arena utilized to host Community and cultural events within the Township. It has a seating capacity of around 1400 persons and the stage and green area is around 250 square-meter.

CLUBS

Kunjakanan is also ta hub of socio-cultural, sporting and other recreational activities facilitated through its various Clubs namely Kalayani Club, Numali Club, Rangchali Club & Rongbong Club. The clubs are all equipped with modern amenities and complemented with smart lighting and striking interiors and well-maintained libraries.

SPORTS / OUTDOOR ACTIVITY

At NRL, sports and outdoor activities are given utmost importance to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Township is home to two playgrounds - meeting desired standards of level lighting along with - 06 lawn tennis courts, indoor stadium for Badminton & Table Tennis, 02 swimming pools with well-trained instructors. Other sporting facilities include 02 squash courts, 02 - indoor air-conditioned gyms with trained instructors and an outdoor gym.

In addition to the aforementioned facilities, Kunjakanan also maintains four electrical substations to provide a load demand of 1.2 Megawatt 24 X 7. It has a water supply network with overhead tanks of capacity 11 lakh litres and underground tanks of 32 lakh litres. A Cable TV network and NG network criss-crosses the Township along a modern Sewage Treatment Plant - paving way for the humble NRL Township of Kunjakanan to emerge as a cosy, clean and comfortable 'home' bustling with life and nestled harmoniously within the lap of Mother Nature!
