Golaghat

Golaghat, one of the oldest erstwhile subdivisions of the North East Indian state of Assam, created during the pre-independence era in the year 1848, became a full fledged district (139 years later) on 23rd October, 1987.

Golaghat is a fast developing town which is commercially expanding by leaps and bounds. It is located near the river Dhansiri which is the most famous and important river. Doyang, Nambor, Doigrung and Kaliyani are the four rivulets of Dhansiri. It is surrounded by Assam Districts like Nagaon, Karbi, Anglong, Jorhat and the state of Nagaland.

Golaghat District attracts a large number of foreign and domestic tourists for its famous Kaziranga National Park, Deopahar ruins (Numaligarh), Baba Than Siva Mandir, Garam Pani (hot spring), Uncle Robin’s Children Museum etc.

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is a distinct asset that defines Golaghat District.

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga was declared as a reserved forest way back in 1908, a Wild Life Sanctuary in 1950, National Park in 1974 and World Heritage Site in 1985. It is located at an advantageous and easily accessible position along the National Highway No.37 and world renowned for its one horned Rhino (Rhinocerous Unicornis), making it a hot spot for foreign and domestic tourists alike.

It is an ecological hotspot of rich flora and fauna. Apart from the Rhino, the park nurtures elephants, wild buffalos, leopards and a host of other animals. It is also a paradise for many different rare and near extinct species of birds.

Migratory birds from many parts of the world come here during the winter season. A wide variety of fresh water fish are also found in the marshy areas of the park.

The park covers an area of 430 sq. km along the river Brahmaputra on the North and the Karbi Anglong hills on the South. The National Highway 37 passes through the park area and tea estates, hemmed by table top tea bushes. One can even see the rhinos and wild elephants straying near the highway.

The park is generally open from November to April. Tourists can take rides on elephants to move around the park, take jeep safaris or simply cruise in a boat on the Brahmaputra along the park.

Kaziranga is well connected by air, road and rail. The nearest airport is in Jorhat which is 96 km. Kaziranga by road from Guwahati is 217 km. The nearest railhead is at Furkating which is about 75 km.

Temperature ranges from 7 to 24 degree Celsius during winter and 18 to 35 degrees in summer.

Majuli

Assam is famous for Majuli, the world's largest riverine island. Situated in the midst of river Brahmaputra, it is the centre of Vishnava culture.

The total land area of Majuli has been steadily decreasing due to strong erosion of the river Brahmaputra.

There are over fifteen Vaishnava monasteries or satras on Majuli. The major satras are Kamalabari, Natun Kamalabari, Auniati, Garmur, Samoguri, Dakhinpat and Bengenaati. These satras are regarded as the main centres for Assamese art, music, dance, drama, handicrafts, literature and religion etc. Auniati satra is famous for its considerable collection of Assamese old utensils, jewellery and handicrafts.Upper Majuli is inhabited by tribes like the Mising and the Deoris and is the centre of a living heritage of colourful costumes and festivals. Majuli is known for its weaving culture and mask making tradition that is practiced by its inhabitants.

Plenty of migratory birds of great varieties are also seen here.
