AGM PRESS RELEASE
09-09-05
NUMALIGARH REFINERY LIMITED DECLARES 30% POST TAX PROFIT AS DIVIDEND – GOVT. OF ASSAM TO RECEIVE OVER RS 15 CRORES AS DIVIDEND FOR THE YEAR 2004-05
The twelfth Annual General Meeting of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) was held on 9th September 2005 at its registered office at Guwahati. The meeting was presided over by Shri Ashok Sinha, Chairman, NRL and C&MD, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. The resolution of declaring 30% of post tax profit as dividend to share holders as per recommendation of NRL’s Board was adopted in the AGM.
NRL came out with impressive financial results for the year 2004-05, with a record Profit after Tax (PAT) of Rs. 409.15 crores, registering a growth of 90% over the previous year’s PAT of Rs. 214.95 crores. The high level of profit is attributable to a number of factors including higher refining gross margin, higher distillate yield and lower fuel & loss. Sales turnover during the year rose by 33.5% to Rs. 4298.99 crores from the previous year’s level of Rs. 3220.26 crores.
A very significant aspect of the Company’s operations is its rising contribution to the State Exchequer. NRL contributed a record amount of Rs. 142.58 crores during FY 2004-05 to the Government of Assam in the form of taxes and duties compared to Rs. 109.44 crores in the previous year. Additionally, the dividend payout to the State Government which holds 12.35 % of the Company’s paid up equity, would be the tune of Rs. 15.43 crores vis-à-vis the dividend of Rs. 7.99 crores paid in the previous year.
On the production front, the refinery processed 2.04 MMT of crude during FY 2004-05 representing 68% capacity utilization and evacuated 1.99 MMT of products. The crude throughput was low due to high inventory/ullage constraints at the refinery arising out of inadequate evacuation of products for non-availability of required number of railway rakes and also due to production loss of 22 days on account of disruptions in road and rail link caused by two spells of floods in the state. However, by optimizing operations, within the constraint of lower throughput, the Company could close the year with a record profit.
In order to expand its business horizon, NRL has embarked upon an ambitious plan to set up a chain of Retail Outlets in various parts of the country for marketing auto fuels. A total of 510 Retail Outlets are planned to be set up in phases, for which authorization from the Government of India had been received. Already 12 retail outlets have been commissioned so far, of which 8 are located in the North East and 4 in the Northern region. Development of another 92 outlets is in progress. The Company expects to commission over 50 outlets in the current financial year.
The Company’s achievements have been wide-ranging and in all spheres of operations. It achieved the rare distinction of being awarded Level 9 certification under the protocol of International Safety Rating System (ISRS), one of the most prestigious Loss Control Management Systems benchmarking tools, by the globally reputed auditing and consulting agency M/s Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Norway. During the year, there was no loss time accident & major fire and by the year end the refinery completed 1137 LTA free days equivalent to 5.13 million man hours. The Company’s focused attention on environment management has also received recognition. It has bagged the prestigious Green Tech award for environmental excellence for two consecutive years.
While business success combined with technological excellence remains an avowed goal, NRL, being conscious of its social commitments, has taken up various schemes under its community development programme. It is in this context that the Company has sponsored a succession of social initiatives that while providing immediate relief also focuses on capability development of the beneficiaries. Some of the schemes launched include self-employment through skill development, community based activities, development of strong and sustainable rural institutions and providing community facilities in co-ordination with various Government departments.
