NRL felicitates cultural icons
 
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika
 
 
Asom Ratna and the cultural icon of Assam - singer, composer, lyricist, litterateur, music director and film director, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was felicitated by employees and associates of Numaligarh Refinery Limited on 01-05-09 at Numaligarh. At a function held at Numaligarh Refinery Township premises, Dr. Hazarika was honoured with a citation and a cheque presented by NRL MD, Dr. B.K.Das. Dr. Hazarika arrived on a visit to Numaligarh Refinery on 30-04-09 and interacted with NRL employees and their families, who gathered in large numbers to meet and pay their regards and respects to the living legend of the State.
 
Late Dilip Sarma and Sudakshina Sarma
 
 
NRL felicitated the Sahitya Academy award winner couple of noted Assamese cultural icon, singer and artist Late Dilip Sarma posthumously along with his wife prominent singer Smt. Sudakshina Sarma at Guwahati on 26-08-2009. At a solemn function held at the Pub Sarania residence of the Sarmas, a citation and a cheque was presented to Smt Sudakshina Sarma by MD NRL, Dr. B.K.Das in presence of representatives from different cultural and literary entities of NRL viz Numaligarh Sakha Sahitya Sabha, Community centre, Kaliyani Club, Rangchali Club and Numali Club.
 
Deepali Borthakur and Neelpawan Barua
 
 
NRL felicitated the artist couple of famous singer Padmashree Deepali Borthakur and her husband noted painter and sculptor Neelpawan Barua for their invaluable contribution in enriching the social and cultural fabric of Assam through the medium of art and culture. At a solemn function held at the residence of the couple on 26-02-2010, a citation along with a cash award was presented to them by MD NRL, Dr. B.K.Das and Director ( Technical) NRL, Mr. Dipak Chakravarty in presence of representatives from different cultural and literary entities of NRL viz. Numaligarh Sakha Sahitya Sabha, Community centre, Kaliyani Club, Rangchali Club and Numali Club.

Help for Majuli Flood victims
 
 
NRL came forward to offer help to the people of Majuli, the largest inhabited riverine island in the world where 1.7 lakh people were affected with the devastating floods which gripped the island . At a solemn public gathering in the island on 21st September 2008, 40 nos. of Canvass Tarpaulin Tents , 4000 packets of Baby Food ( Cerelac) and 16 tonnes of Cattle Feed were provided from NRL as flood relief materials to the people of Majuli .

Espousing the cause of Education : Gyandeep, Prerona, Dronacharyya and Gyanyatra – Awards 2008
 
 

NRL has been taking up various motivational activities to enhance the educational environment around the refinery. Education is identified as one of the primary focus areas of NRL’s structured Community Development programme. As part of the ongoing efforts in his field, cash awards to the meritorious students from the schools within 10 kms radius have been instituted which not only helps them financially but also serves as a motivational tool for the students. The awards for the year 2008 was distributed on 31st July, 2008 in a ceremonial function organised in Ponka Rupram Hazarika High School, Telgaram. The Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat Sri Dipak Kumar Goswami and Inspector Schools, Golaghat Sri Kabiruddin Ahmed was special invitees in the function. The Chairman of Numaligarh Refinery Community Development Committee Sri Dilip Kumar Goswami explained various activities under community development schemes of NRL and educational activities in particular. Sri Dipak Kumar Goswami, DC Golaghat advised the students and teachers about discipline, dedication and determination under all odds in his oratory and urged the young students to strive to be model citizens. There was a huge gathering of students, guardians, parents and media persons. After the meeting, a career counselling program was also held for the students which was conducted by ‘Career Care’ of Guwahati.

All the awards have been designed to benefit target groups amongst students and teachers. A brief gist the awards is given below:

a) Gyandeep Award: Under this scheme, cash award is given to the meritorious students of the examination centers within 10 kms radius of refinery. The amount of this award was as per the following slabs–

  1. Secured 1st Division in Class – X - Rs.10,000.00
  2. Secured Star Marks in Class – X - Rs.12,000.00
  3. Rank Holder in 20 positions in Class – X - Rs.15,000.00
  4. Secured 1st Division in Class – XII - Rs.15,000.00
  5. Secured Star Marks in Class – XII - Rs.17,000.00
  6. Rank Holder in 20 positions in Class – XII - Rs.20,000.00

This year alone, 64 students from 19 schools and colleges received Gyandeep award.

b) Prerona Award: Under this scheme, cash awards are given to the first, second and third position holder girls students in Class-VIII, IX and X of the schools in the within 10 kms radius of refinery. 246 students from 27 schools benefited from this award this year which is divided into the following slabs in order of rank achieved by the girl students :

1st Position - Rs. 3,000.00
2nd Position - Rs. 2,000.00
3rd Position - Rs. 1,000.00

c) Dronacharyya Award : Teaching is a noble profession and teachers shoulder the great responsibility to educate the future of our country and instil the right values. In order to motivate and encourage teachers to put in their very best of dedication and devotion, a new cash award scheme - “Dronacharyya”, was introduced this year. Under this scheme NRL proposes to award Rs.10,000.00 against each student secured 1st Division in HSLC Examination subject to maximum of Rs.50,000.00 to any school. This amount will be a corpus fund of the teachers of the school and shall be utilized to the benefit of the teachers fraternity of the school. This year alone, NRL has disbursed an amount of Rs.2,40,000.00 to 10 schools against 26 students secured 1st division in HSLC against the scheme.


d) Gyanyatra : In addition to the above, this year saw NRL formulate another very effective and motivational scheme for the benefit of the students – “Gyanyatra”. In this scheme, first 10 meritorious students with accompanying teachers from the schools within 10 kms radius of refinery were granted financial assistance to undertake an educational excursion to Delhi and Agra. This year a total of 290 people including students, teachers, medical team, volunteers, etc. visited Delhi and Agra in two groups. The first team left Numaligarh on 22nd April and second team left on 25th April,2008. A co-ordination committee – “Gyanyatra Co-ordination Committee – 2008” was constituted among the teachers by the schools to look after the entire process.Upon return from the expedition, an essay competition was held by the committee in Numaligarh High School among the students on the travel experience and three students were selected. Cash awards of Rs.10,000.00, Rs.7,500.00 and Rs.5,000.00 were given to first three winners of the essay competition in the same function for Gyandeep, Prerona nd Dronacharyya on 31st July, 2008.

 Water Storage Facilities For Golaghat Municipal Board
 
 

NRL reconstructed the overhead storage water tank of Golaghat Municipal Board at a total cost of Rs. 8.50 lakhs, which also included the cost of consultancy for treatment of drinking water through a reputed firm which specialises in such jobs, M/s Ion Exchange, Bangalore. The Storage Tank was formally inaugurated by the Chairman CD Steering Committee , Mr. D. K Goswami on 15-11-07 . DC, Golaghat , Mr. D.K.Goswami was also present on the occasion. In the inaugural function held at Golaghat, the report of M/S Ion Exchange was also handed over to Chairman , Golaghat Municipal Board.

 Ambulance For Assam Bhaven, Mumbai
 
NRL donated an ambulance to Assam Bhavan, Mumbai for the benefit of cancer patients from Assam who proceed to the metropolis for treatment. The ambulance is expected to ferry patients to and fro from various hospitals across the city thereby reducing considerable amount of inconvenience faced in arranging for transport in a big city like Mumbai.

The handing over ceremony of the ambulance took place in a small function held in Assam Bhavan, Mumbai on 4th of December’07 to mark the commencement of the services. The function was was attended by NRL MD, Dr. B. K. Das, Director ( Technical), Mr. Dipak Chakravarty, Director( Finance), Mr. Nilmoni Bhakta, Commissioner(Planning) Govt. of Assam Mr. H.S. Das, Director, NRL Mr. J.P. Rajkhowa, Resident Commissioner, Govt. of Assam, Mr. Debashish Sarma, Chairman CD Steering Committee NRL, Mr. D.K. Goswami , Co. Secy, NRL Mr. H.K.Sarmah along with all inmates of Assam Bhawan including patients & their attendants. The key of the TATA SUMO vehicle was formally handed over by MD to the Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan

 Aid for Bokakhat Crematorium
 
 
NRL has lend a helping hand for upgradation of facilities in the Bokakhat Crematorium. A resting place for the people accompanying their near and dear ones in their final journey shall be put up with the grant of Rs. 4.88 lakhs to be provided for the noble project. 50 % of the sanctioned amount was handed over by CM(PR), Mr. B.Barooah to the Chairman of the Crematorium development committee, Mr. Jiten Bora in the last week of December’07. The foundation stone for the project was also laid so that work is completed at the earliest possible time.

 Grant for Herbarium
 
 
Kaziranga Wild life Society under the able guidance of Dr. Padmeswar Gogoi, renowned botanist conceived the idea of setting up of a herbarium to showcase the rich and diverse species of flora and fauna found in the region. NRL will be supporting this noble venture which is estimated to cost Rs. 4.36 lakhs.
