The Butterfly Valley

NRL is committed to the cause of protecting and conserving the environment and ecology in the vicinity of the refinery so as to maintain the fragile ecological balance in an industry environment. A true manifestation of the Company's efforts in this direction is the setting up of an entire bio system comprising of rare and endangered species of butterflies, aptly called the Butterfly Valley within the Township premises. The sprawling Butterfly Valley covers around 30 acres of land surrounded by small hillocks and is located adjacent to the enchanting Deopahar hills. The Valley is also replete with varied flora and fauna and houses about 60,000 plants endemic to North East India. At least 75 species of butterflies belonging to five broad butterfly families have been listed so far. A large number of host plants for different butterfly species dot the valley. A laboratory is also housed inside the premises where entomologists carry out their observation studies and other research work. A moth pavilion is an added attraction where visitors get an opportunity to know the distinction between a moth and a butterfly.

An ecological hot spot, the North-east is already a natural home to a dozen of endangered butterfly species. But a vast area of this untamed land is yet to be tapped and Butterfly Park offers the unique opportunity to explore the verdant beauty of Northeast with its rich flora and fauna.

The immense medicinal benefits of herbal plants are known to all. Numaligarh Refinery located strategically near the rich forest belt of Kaziranga National Park, Deopahar Hills and Nambor forest is bestowed naturally with a wide variety of medicinal plants, which are available in its vicinity.

With a view to extract the medicinal benefits of those plants, a herbal medicinal garden has been established which is named 'Smritibon', located within the Butterfly Valley. 'Smriti' means 'Remembrance' and true to its name, it perpetuates the noble idea of commemorating our beloved ones, by way of planting herbal plants in their names. Mr. Gunaram Khanika, a famous herbal medicinal expert of the country has extended his valuable suggestions and constant guidance for the development of this garden, which has helped in a big way to cover almost all the herbal medicinal plants available in the locality. More than 5000 herbal plants representing about 75 species of medicinal plants have so far been planted in the garden.
